# Create a task

Select **Add Task** on the [Tasks page](/reference/tasks.md) to give the task a name and choose its event, due date, and starting status. To add one directly on an event's **Tasks** tab instead, see [Create and manage tasks for an event](/reference/event-page/tasks/create-and-manage-event-tasks.md).

The dialog keeps these choices together. This example has a specific due date and starts **In Progress** because work has already begun. For work you have not started, use **Add Task** in the **To Do** column instead.

## Select the event

In the Tasks page's Add Task dialog, enter a **Task Name**, then select an **Event**. The dialog lists events with their names and dates. Select the event before choosing an optional group, Event role, or completion dependency because those choices belong to that event.

## Choose a task group

If the selected event has task groups, choose one in **Task Group**. Choose **No group** when the work stands alone. Adding a task to a group does not remove the task's individual status, assignee, due date, or completion behavior.

## Choose a due date

Use the due-date fields to choose a date source, an offset, or a completion dependency. You can use the event date, event creation date, proposal date, booking date, a specific date, completion of another task, or completion of a task group. See [Set a task due date and completion dependency](/reference/tasks/set-task-due-date.md) for the choices and their effects.

## Assign responsibility

After selecting an event, you can choose an **Event Role** when that event has active roles. A role assigns the task through the event's role assignment. You can also assign a workspace member after the task is created. See [Assign a task to a member or Event role](/reference/tasks/assign-a-task.md).

## Choose the starting status

Choose the starting task status, then select **Add Task**. The task appears in the matching Board lane or List. The available statuses are **To Do**, **In Progress**, and **Complete**.

The task name and event are required. A task with no name or event cannot be added.
