# Add documents and attachments to a proposal

Proposal documents have two different purposes. **Design Doc** is for one PDF shown with a large preview. **Attachments** is for one or more named files that the recipient can download. Both are client-facing proposal sections and are separate from ordinary files kept under the event's **Details > Files**.

Use [proposal sections](/reference/event-page/proposal/design-and-sections.md) to add and arrange either section. For the separate event file record, see [manage event files](/reference/event-page/details/manage-event-files.md). Use [proposal design](/reference/event-page/proposal/style-the-proposal.md) for shared section styling.

## Add a Design Doc

1. Open the event and select **Proposal**.
2. Open an existing section's settings, or select **Add Section Above** where the document should appear.
3. Under **Documents**, select **Design Doc**, then select **Add**.
4. In the empty section, select the PDF upload area or drag a PDF onto it. The uploader also provides **Browse**.

The section keeps one PDF and displays its first page as a large preview. In the editor, select the preview or **View Design Document** to open the document. To replace it, remove the current document and upload the new PDF.

This example shows the beginning of a design PDF inside the proposal. The document remains separate from the proposal's other images and text sections.

Select **Preview Proposal**. The client-facing preview should show the PDF preview and **View Design Document** control without the editor's remove control. Selecting **View Design Document** opens the document for viewing.

## Add Attachments

1. From the Proposal tab, select **Add Section Above** where the files should appear.
2. Under **Documents**, select **Attachments**, then select **Add**.
3. In the empty section, select **Browse** or drag a document onto the upload area. Repeat the upload when the section should contain more than one file.
4. Select a displayed file name to edit it. Enter the client-facing label in **Name**, then press Enter or click outside the field to save it.

The attachment label is separate from the file's contents. Use a name that tells the recipient what the download contains. In **Section Style**, use **Item Alignment** to choose **Left**, **Center**, or **Right** for the attachment tiles.

In this example, the uploaded PDF is labeled **Design overview** under **Documents to download**. Unlike Design Doc, an attachment appears as a small named file rather than a large page preview.

<div data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://2616748322-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FUtdSEPutB4SrRwwUMOIx%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-b06c6541989bad8e7ff3f3c02f72796574eb5719%2F15-proposal-attachments.png?alt=media" alt="Attachments section titled Documents to download in the Proposal editor, containing a PDF file tile named Design overview with a pencil beside its editable name." width="550"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Select **Preview Proposal**. Each attachment should appear with its saved name. A recipient can select an attachment tile to download that file. The section does not expose ordinary event attachments that were uploaded under **Details > Files**, and adding a proposal attachment does not add a file to that internal event section.
