# Lock or unlock an event

Lock an event to help prevent accidental changes while you review it. Unlock it when you intend to edit. This safeguard is separate from signing a contract or recording a payment.

When an event is locked, the padlock and disabled edit controls make that state visible on the Event Page.

## Change the lock

Before unlocking, review **Details > Files > Contracts**. Unlocking can delete an unsigned generated contract so that you can change the event before generating a new document. Do not unlock while you expect a client to finish signing that document. See [Share and track an event contract](/reference/event-page/details/share-and-track-event-contract.md).

1. Open the event from **Events**.
2. Find the padlock at the right of the summary above the tabs. A closed padlock means the event is locked; an open padlock means it is unlocked.
3. Select the padlock to change it. If **Event Unlocked** appears, select **Close** to return to the event.

The padlock changes to show the new state. Proposal and Booked events are locked by default; Inquiry events start unlocked. You can deliberately change that state as you work.

Unlocking does not grant permission to edit an event you cannot otherwise edit. A locked **Order** or **Build** tab can also have a separate plan requirement, explained on [Order](/reference/event-page/order.md) and [Build](/reference/event-page/build.md).
