# Set material units and planning prices

The material unit and planning prices give recipes a consistent cost starting point. They do not represent the client price for a design and they do not update a purchase order after it has been created.

## Set the recipe unit

1. From **Core Data**, open **Materials** and select the edit icon beside the material.
2. Choose **Individual Name** for the unit one recipe quantity represents.
3. Review any unit-use warning, then select **Save Hard Good**.

For example, a vase can be planned by item while ribbon can use a different unit. Change a unit only when the shared planning meaning needs to change. FlowerBuddy does not convert existing recipe quantities or prices for you.

## Add or update a planning price

1. In the **Materials** table, select the price count or price control for the material.
2. In the pricing dialog, add a price or use the edit control on the price that needs correction.
3. Set the vendor when you know it, then enter the price amount, group name, and the number of individual units in the group.
4. Save only after the group quantity agrees with the price basis.

A planning price is the buying-cost estimate FlowerBuddy uses while planning. It is not the price charged to a client, the supplier amount entered on a purchase order, or an event-specific price. When a price is for a pack or case, the group must show how many individual items that price covers. For example, a $24 case of 12 votives has a different recipe cost than $24 for one votive.
