# Add and manage materials

The **Materials** tab is the reusable catalog for hard goods and mechanics, such as vases, containers, ribbon, and supplies. It is not an Inventory count. Add a material when your team needs a shared record to identify or price it in recipes.

## Add a material

1. From **Core Data**, open **Materials** and select **Add Hard Good**.
2. Search the available list and select a material when it is already a useful starting point for your workspace.
3. Select **Add**, or select **Add New Item** to create a material that is not listed.

Choosing a listed item adds a reusable record to your workspace catalog. Open it after adding it and check the unit, colors, and price details before using it in a recipe.

## Describe the material for your team

For a new record, enter a clear **Name** and choose **Individual Name**, which defines how a recipe counts one unit. **Name** and **Individual Name** are required. Add **Category**, colors, whether the item is **Disposable**, dimensions, **Product Page Url**, vendor, **Vendor Product ID**, and **UPC** when those details will help your team find, buy, or substitute the item.

For example, a saved vase can use the name "Compote vase, clear glass," **Individual Name** "Item," and its supplier page URL. A mechanics item such as floral tape can include a vendor product ID and UPC when that avoids ordering the wrong variation. Do not use the **Disposable** choice as an Inventory status. It describes the material itself for planning.

## Update or remove a material

Select the edit icon in the material row to change shared information. The editor warns that changes apply throughout your account, including past events and proposals. Review the warning before selecting **Save Hard Good**, especially when changing the name, unit, or dimensions of a material already used in completed work.

Select the delete icon only when the material is no longer needed. Deletion removes it from Core Data, Inventory, and the inventory log. Use [Merge materials](/reference/core-data/materials/merge-materials.md) when two records are duplicates and their linked planning history should point to one retained material.
